Camp Alexander, Lake George, Colorado - July 6-12, 2008

Scouts who are interested in attending or have questions should contact Campmaster Don Treat dontreat@mac.com

Camp Alexander is located in the beautiful Eleven mile Canyon in the Pike National Forest approximately 45 miles west of Colorado Springs, and two miles south of Lake George, in Park County, Colorado. Camp Alexander is between 8200 and 8600 feet elevation. There is an abundance of wildlife including black bears, raccoons, skunks, rabbits, squirrels, deer, elk, coyotes, snakes, and bald eagles.

The weather at Camp Alexander is usually very nice with warm days, usually 75 degrees and cool nights, around 50 degrees; however, we have seen snow during the summer months - so Be Prepared!

At Camp Alexander we firmly believe that summer camp is an opportunity to do more than earn merit badges. It is a time for a boy to learn about himself, develop leadership skills, build character and enjoy the mountain environment.

Scouts will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of programs, ranging from aquatics to shooting sports, from nature to mountain biking, from rock climbing to the First Class Center where the Scout handbook comes alive with the essential camping and outdoor skills.

"Hut Hiking" trek in the Swiss Alps - June 14 - 27, 2008

We are planning a "hut hiking" trek in the Swiss Alps. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please reply to this message. Contact: James Cauble, 713-664-7801 (h), james@cauble.org

Dates: June 14 - 27, 2008
Cost: $1,300 to $1,400 plus airfare to/from Zurich, which is currently $1,300
Total cost of $2,600-$2,700 at current airfare.
Age: This trek is restricted to Scouts currently in 10th grade and older.
Participant also need to have backpacking experience and be in good physical shape.

After two days of sightseeing in Zurich and Luzern, we start hiking on the Alpine Pass Route. This hiking path is Switzerland's equivalent of the Appalachian Trail, and we will cover 60-70 miles. This is a strenuous hike with substantial climbs of 2,000 to 4,000 ft almost every day. We will spend one or two days at the International Scout Camp in Kandersteg near the end of the trek. We will tour Bern, the Swiss capital, before returning to Zurich and the flight back to Houston.

This is a "hut hiking" trek. We will stay in youth hostels or mountain chalets each night, so we will not be carrying tents, stoves, cooking gear, or food other than lunch. On most days, we will have a hearty Swiss breakfast in our lodge, then hike up and over a high mountain pass, and descend to a village or hut in the next valley.

In addition to backpacking in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, this trek is designed as a multi-cultural experience. There will be substantial interaction with the local residents and with fellow hikers from throughout the world.

If you are interested to participating, please let me know and I will send more detailed trek information. We also have a few spots for adult participants. It would be possible for an adult to exit or join the group midway through the trek.
