The Ultimate Wilderness Experience

Troop 55

Summer 2000 Alaska Trip

Troop 55 Summer 2000 Expedition:

When:    Depart for Alaska:          July 22
        Arrive home:          August 3

What:    Ten days of hiking and rafting above the Arctic Circle in one of the
most beautiful, pristine, and remote parts of North America.

We will arrive in Fairbanks in the evening
of July 22. The next day, we will drive to a point where we can be picked
up by a bush plane and flown in several sorties to Kutuk Lake in the Angetch
Peak Area of the Gates of the Arctic National Park. This is one of the most
pristine areas of the park. We will break into groups of five and hike for
five days. The entire time we will be practicing "leave no trace" camping.

We will end our hike near the Alatna River,
where we will float three days down to Allakaket with some of the best
fishing in Alaska. In Allakalet, we will be picked up by bush plane again
and flown back to our vehicle for a day's drive back to Fairbanks, for our
return late on the night of August 2.

Who:    Scouts who are 14 or older and able to carry a 50-pound pack for
five days.
Only Scouts and adults in very good physical condition should
participate.
Scoutmaster approval is required for all participants.

Cost:    $1,650 per person (includes airfare and all food, fees, bush plane
transfers and other ground expenses in Alaska).
Some financial assistance, or the chance to
earn some, will be available.

Preparation:    Two mandatory shakedown treks will occur in the late Spring.
