Preparing For Blue Ridge:

 

Preparations for Summer Camp at Blue Ridge Scout Reservation Revised: May 22, 1999     I.  Organization for Blue Ridge  The Patrol Method will be in effect for our travel and activities at camp.  In our campsite, we will camp by patrols.  Scouts are expected to coordinate their activities through their Patrol Leader, whowill work with the Assistant Scoutmaster assigned to that patrol.  High Knoll Crew  Leader - David Graber New River, Mountain Man, and Fish Camp groups will select a Scout CrewLeader for their group.   II.  What to Bring to Blue Ridge Scout Reservation.  Very Important: Label EVERYTHING with Scout’s name & Troop 55.   Scouts attending Camp Ottari Merit Badge Camp  

A.  If you plan to take the Swimming or Lifesaving Merit Badges:

 These merit badges require the Scout to jump in the water fully clothed in long-sleeved shirt and pants, and to remove their clothingand use it for flotation devices.  Accordingly, you will want to bring:    1.  Loose fitting long-sleeve shirt.  2.  Loose fitting long pants (preferably not jeans).  3.  Shoes that you do not mind getting wet.  

 B.  If you plan to take the First Class Advancement course:

   1.  Frame pack (internal or external, with hip belt) suitable for an overnight trip   with your gear  2.  Backpackable tent (share with a buddy!)  

 C.  All Scouts should bring the following items:

  1.  Hat   2.  Scout Book   3.  Swimsuit - pack it on top.  You’ll need it as soon as we get to camp!   4.  Towel   5.  Soap and toiletries   6.  Unbreakable plate, knife, fork, spoon, cup or water bottle   7.  Pencil, pen & notebook   8.  Handkerchiefs   9.  Sleeping bag   10.  Hiking boots   11.  Sunscreen.   12.  About 4 T-shirts, including 2 Troop 55 1999 Camp T-shirts (to be issued  before we leave for camp)   13.  2 pairs of Shorts   14.  long pants, if plan on horseback riding   15.  Scout uniform (must be working during travel)   16.  Athletic shoes   17.  Rain Gear   18.  Small Flashlight   19.  Daypack or hip belt with 2 water bottles.   20.  Merit badge books (some will be available in Troop library)   21.  Money for 2 airport travel meals, trading post, merit badge supplies,    ammunition for shooting sports

 D.  High Knoll Trail Scouts

 E.  Mountain Man Scouts

 Please consult the list previously mailed to you.  Send in yourshirt order   immediately, if you have not already.

See list of gear in separate handout re New River Adventure!     III.  Recommended (but not essential) Items for Blue Ridge Scout Reservation.  The following items are recommended:    1.  camera   2.  compass   3.  Folding camp stool   4.  Non-aerosol bug repellant   5.  First aid kit.   6.  Pillow   7.  Watch IV.  Items Not To Bring to Blue Ridge Scout Reservation  Do not bring the following items:  a. Radios or tv’s  b. Walkman  c. Game Boy and other electronic games  d. Weapons or ammunition of any kind  e. Slingshots  f. Fuel of any kind  g. Fixed blade knives (folding pocket knives are okay)  h.  Lighters  i. Aerosols   V.  Packing  If you are traveling with the troop via Delta Airlines, everything you are taking must meet Delta’s baggage requirements.  The maximum number of items that may be checked as baggage is three.  We recommend you not take more than two, plus one small carry-on such as a day pack.   Each bag must have a total length, width and height of 62 inches or less, be securely closed, and have the name, address and telephone number of the Scout on it.  Duffle bags work great for stowing gear.   VI.  Travel Plans.    A.  All Scouts must be in full Class A uniform - Troop 55 neckerchief, Scout shirt, belt, and pants or shorts.  Your Scout uniform is like a plane ticket.  You have to have it on to travel.  No exceptions.  B. Very Important: Note revised travel schedule:     Scouts traveling with the Troop should be at Bush Intercontinental Airport inside  Terminal not later than 6:45 a.m. on Sunday morning,June 20.   We depart at 7:50 AM on Delta Flight 942 to Atlanta (arrive 10:53AM), where we will change to Delta flight 1086, departing 1:20 PM, arrivingGreensboro, N.C. at 2:32 PM.   We will return from Greensboro, N.C. on June 26, 1999 on DeltaFlight 2059 at 4:55 PM, arriving Atlanta 6:22 PM. We will change to Delta Flight 823, departing Atlanta 8:05 PM, arriving Bush Intercontinental at9:14 PM   VII.  Follow the Rules.  Scouts are expected to adhere to the Scout Oath and Law.  Scouts and their parents are also reminded of the following specific Troop55 rules.   a. Wear your full Class A Scout uniform with neckerchief on travel days.  b. A Scout may touch another Scout’s equipment, tent, or belongings only with permission.  c. Parents may be required to travel to camp at their expense and take a Scout home who fails to abide by the troop and camp rules.  d. Camping and duties will be by Patrol.  Scouts will perform duties in cooperation with  the Senior Patrol Leader, their Patrol Leader, and Assistant Patrol Leader.  e. “Buddy System” is in force during travel, all water activities, or when outside immediate camp area. f. Lights out at 10 P.M. (Or otherwise at Scoutmaster’s discretion). g.  Ground fires are authorized on by the Scoutmaster or his designee.  No fires will be left unattended.  h. Fire safety rules will be strictly enforced.  i.  Scouts will maintain their tents and gear in inspection condition. j. The consequences of failing to abide by the Camp and Troop rules include extra work detail, calls home, and being sent home.   VIII. Mail & Emergency Contacts while at Blue Ridge Scout  Reservation. The Camper’s name.  b. Date of prescription.  c. Doctor’s name and phone number.  d. Correct dosage.
