Troop 55 Summer Camping
Summer 2006
Troop 55 and Crew 55 are planning for eight summer camps for 2006. Some scouts will also attend leadership camps.

- Chimayo Scout Reservation, New Mexico (Camp Frank Rand) - June 10 - 17
This camp is located in the mountains northeast of Santa Fe, NM. The Walkabout program is an introductory
backpacking experience where the scouts cover approximately 15 miles during the week. If there is sufficient
interest, a longer trek may be offered in the Pecos Wilderness, which adjoins the camp.

Who: Open to all scouts who are 12 and over, plus any scouts who is 11 provided he has SM consent.
Cost: About $750, which includes airfare.

- Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch, Texas - June 18 - 24
Merit badge camp in the Davis Mountains of west Texas.
Who: Open to all scouts.
Length: One week, departing on Sat or Sun, returning the following Sat or Sun.
Cost: $475. Includes flight to Midland, then bus to camp.

- Camp Loll, Wyoming - June 30 - July 8
Merit badge camp in the Tetons, next to Yellowstone, in northwest Wyoming.
Who: Open to all scouts.
Length: 9 days, departing on Fri, and returning on Sat of the following week.
Tour Yellowstone on Fri, Sat and Sun, and then go to Camp Loll on Monday morning.
Cost: About $1,200. Includes flight to Jackson, WY, and then bus transportation.

- Alaska advanced backpacking trek - June 30 - July 12
Six possible itineraries. Crews limited to 6 persons (probably 4 scouts and 2 adults).
Who: Open to scouts who (a) have finished 8th grade and (b) have the SM's consent (based on prior backpacking experience).
Length: 9 days on the trail, plus 1 or 2 days at beginning and end for travel.
Cost: about $2,800

- Ecuador - July 7 - 22 (Crew 55, but open to qualified scouts from T-55)
The is a combination service project and high adventure trek. During the first week, T-55 scouts will conduct a merit badge camp for Ecuadorian scouts. Scouts need to be knowledgeable in a subject area, and some fluency in Spanish would be helpful.
During the second week, the T-55 scouts will do a backpacking trek in the Ecuadorian cloud forest. Specific immunizations may be required.
A side trips to colonial Quito, Indian markets, and other sites are planned.
Participation will be restricted to scouts age 15+ and Star.
Cost: $1,000 plus airfare (approximately $1,500 in total, but some use air miles)

- Colorado advanced backpacking & mountain climbing trek - July 15-29
Hike portions of Colorado Trail and Continental Divide Trail (60 miles) , climb three 14,000+ peaks,
rafting on the Animas River, flag the narrow-gauge train for ride back to Durango. Will also visit Mesa Verde.
Who: Open to scouts who (a) have finished 9th grade and (b) have the SM's consent (based on prior backpacking experience).
Length: Depart on a Saturday, and return on Saturday two weeks later.
11 days on the trail, plus 2 days at beginning and end for touring, rafting, and travel.
Cost: $850

- Montana backpacking trek - July 28 to August 6
This is an introductory backpacking experience. The group will start with 2-3 days of backpacking in Glacier National Park,
then 2-3 days at Boone & Crockett Club, and then to the Bob Marshall Wilderness for more backpacking.
Who: Open to any scout who has done either A or B:
A. (a) finished 7th grade by the date of the Montana trek,
(b) attended at least one BSA summer camp, and
(c) attended at least one T-55 weekend campout that involved backpacking.
B. (a) finished 6th grade by the date of the Montana trek,
(b) attended at least one summer camp with T-55,
(c) attended at least two T-55 weekend campouts that involved backpacking, and
(d) has the SM's consent.
Length: 9 days.
Cost: about $1,400

- Grand Teton advanced backpacking trek, Wyoming - August 4 - 12
Backpacking on the Teton Crest Trail in northwest Wyoming, south of Yellowstone. Will cover approximately 50 miles.
Who: Open to scouts who (a) have finished 8th grade, (b) prior backpacking experience, and (c) can run 6 miles in 60 minutes.
Length: 8 days. Depart on Friday, and return on Saturday of the following week.
Cost: $700

- National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) - June 4-10 and June 18-24 (two separate sessions)

- National Advance Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) - June and July (six separate one-week sessions)
Conducted at Philmont Scout Ranch, this advanced leadership course includes a short backpacking trek.
Open to scouts who have completed the NYLT course.

Summer 2007
- Philmont backpacking treks - June 10 - 23, 2007
Crew 55 has reservations for 4-5 backpacking crews to do treks of at least 50 miles.
Scouts from Troop 55 can participate provided they meet the following requirements:
(a) will have graduated from 8th grade by June 2007, or will be at least 14 yrs old by January 1, 2007,
(b) actively participate in the training sessions to get ready, and
(c) have the SM's consent based on prior backpacking experience.
Each backpacking crew can have up to 12 members (no more than 4 adults per crew).
The group will likely fly to Albuquerque and then go by bus to Philmont.
Cost: Not yet set. In 2005, the fee was $900 including airfare.
Registration: Plan to start taking sign-ups in September 2006.General policy for summer camps in future years:
Troop 55 usually arranges three levels of camps in June, and three levels of camps in July/August. The three levels are:
(a) merit badge camp (open to all scouts),
(b) mid-level adventure camp (targeted to scouts who are 12-14), and
(c) high adventure camp (usually restricted to scouts who are 14 & over), which may be arranged jointly with Crew 55.
The camps are usually selected in September and October for the following year.
